
If you use Claude to write, code, or touch up a draft, your output is now carrying a hidden digital signature. Anthropic has confirmed that all new Claude models released on or after August 2 will embed machine-readable watermarks directly into text and attach metadata to generated images.
The decision comes as part of Anthropic’s commitment to the European Union’s Code of Practice on Transparency under the EU AI Act. However, rather than limiting the feature to European users, Anthropic is enforcing the watermarking system globally across every platform surface. This includes the Claude API, Claude Code, Cowork, Tag, and third-party cloud hosts like AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry.
How the hidden watermarks actually work
For text outputs, the watermark is woven imperceptibly into the choice and pattern of words. It remains invisible to human readers and does not alter the meaning, readability, or quality of the response. The embedded signal aims to travel with the text when copied and pasted, surviving light edits along the way.
For visual outputs, including JPG, PNG, and SVG files, Anthropic relies on digitally signed provenance metadata following the open C2PA standard—a framework already backed by tech giants like OpenAI and Meta. Image metadata can still be stripped relatively easily by taking a screenshot or converting file formats. However, text watermarks should offer a more persistent trace.
Proofreading gets stamped, raising accuracy concerns
What makes Anthropic’s rollout particularly notable is its “nuke it from orbit” implementation. The EU AI Act explicitly exempts basic assistive tasks, like grammar corrections or standard text formatting that doesn’t substantially change the underlying meaning. Anthropic, however, decided to err on the side of caution by watermarking everything coming out of supported models.
That means if you paste an original article or essay into Claude just to summarize, translate, or check for typos, the returned text will still carry an invisible watermark.
Anthropic openly acknowledges this limitation. The company noted that a detected mark merely indicates Claude processed the text, not that the AI authored the core ideas.
Circumvention risks and upcoming detection tools
Despite the ambitious scope, technical challenges remain. The watermarks can fail on very short snippets of text, and heavy editing or running the material through another AI system can destroy the embedded pattern. Plus, once Anthropic releases its upcoming detection tools and APIs, third parties could potentially reverse-engineer ways to remove the marks entirely.
For now, Anthropic plans to roll out watermarking to older legacy models retroactively while preparing documentation for its detection tools. As regulatory pressure mounts worldwide, invisible tracking is quickly becoming the new default for consumer AI.
