Ray Dalio is having a Euro summer vacation to remember

Ray Dalio is having a European vacation for the ages, featuring two very different kinds of spectacle: a 4 a.m. birthday party at the world’s best nightclub and a solar eclipse.

Days after celebrating his 77th birthday at UNVRS, the “hyperclub” on the Spanish island of Ibiza, the billionaire investor shared a more reflective dispatch on his social media pages after watching the eclipse.

“My reaction from just watching the solar eclipse is that it was a spiritual moment,” Dalio wrote, saying the event brought people “with all different backgrounds and values together with nature and each other.”

In his post, the Bridgewater Associates founder compared that collective experience with the World Cup, although he noted that the soccer tournament “didn’t have the nature part.”

It isn’t clear exactly where Dalio watched the eclipse, but it passed over the Balearic Islands, of which Ibiza is a part, between 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Spain was one of only two countries, alongside Iceland, to see a total eclipse.

Representatives for Dalio did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider outside normal US working hours.

Dalio’s meditation offered a striking counterpoint to his birthday weekend. In footage posted from the club, acrobats performed as confetti fell, smoke cannons fired, and dance music pounded.

The investor said he stayed until 4 a.m., had “a blast” with family and friends, and recommended the club to followers who happened to be nearby.

UNVRS opened in 2025 on the site of the former Ku Club and Privilege, two venues central to Ibiza’s nightlife history. It topped DJ Mag’s 2026 ranking of the world’s best clubs.

The eclipse inspired a more philosophical review. Dalio framed humanity’s central struggle as a contest between spirituality, caring for the common good and nature, and selfishness that harms others.

“Whether spirituality wins this battle over selfishness will determine the well-being and perhaps the sustainability of mankind,” he wrote.

He was hardly alone in being captivated by the celestial event.

In London, where more than 90% of the sun was obscured, thousands of people watched from parks and other public spaces. Ahead of the event, Business Insider witnessed hundreds of people lining up in sweltering heat outside a convenience store rumored to have eclipse glasses.

When supplies ran out, a secondary market sprang up on the sidewalk. One man sought £100, or about $135, for two pairs.

Others resorted to using colanders to project the eclipse’s shadow safely; retailer John Lewis said colander sales had jumped nearly 40% from a year earlier.
