Earlier this week Microsoft announced a host of improvements coming to the Windows 11 platform and one of those improvements was memory management, a smart move in this age of crippling memory prices, but the RAM shortage isn’t the only reason Microsoft is improving memory management on Windows 11 according to an analyst at IDC, who states that he believes part of the reason is the MacBook Neo.
Apple announced the MacBook Neo earlier this year after several leaks and rumors about its existence, and it lit the laptop market on fire because of its low cost. Apple did eventually raise prices for this machine due to the increase in memory on its bill of materials, but even with the price increase it’s still competitive with comparable Windows 11 machines on price.

According to IDC’s Consumer Devices Trackers research manager Jitesh Ubrani, Apple’s MacBook Neo play is a strong factor in causing not just Microsoft but the entire market to take a step back and rethink things. “The introduction of the MacBook Neo is putting real pressure on the entire PC ecosystem. We expect vendors to respond with a combination of new silicon, a more efficient OS from Microsoft, and aggressive promotional pricing,” said Ubrani.
With Microsoft working to improve memory management on Windows 11, the platform as a whole will become more efficient just like Ubrani is expecting. That will allow Microsoft and its partners to offer comparable laptops on price that function just as or close to as efficiently as Apple’s latest. It isn’t clear exactly when Microsoft will have these changes pushed out to Windows 11 users, but the company has stated that it wants to make them by the end of the year.
