Compared to Android’s near-infinite way of customizing your home screen and lock screen, iOS almost feels downright rigid. But that will change in iOS 27. According to the folks at 9to5Mac, iOS 27 will give users new ways to customize their lock screen.
iOS 27 will offer ways to customize lock screen
According to the report, there are at least four new ways iOS 27 will let users customize their lock screen. This includes the ability to extend their wallpapers. This actually leverages the new Apple Intelligence editing feature, which expands your image in a clever way to make it fit your lock screen better. Users can extend it manually, or if iOS detects it’s not a very clean fit, it will ask users if they want to use the Extend feature.
Next up is the ability to generate your own wallpapers. Maybe you’ve been browsing the internet and Pinterest but can’t find what you’re looking for. Don’t worry, with Apple’s Image Playground, users can generate wallpapers themselves. You can choose to either take an existing photo to create a stylized version of it, or you can create one from scratch. Note that Image Playground isn’t as robust when it comes to image generation like Google’s Nanobanana or ChatGPT’s Images. However, it should be good enough.
Then there are additional customization features, like shrinking and moving the clock on the lock screen. In iOS 26, users could adjust the size of the clock. But iOS 27 will let you shrink it further and move it around. Lastly, users can finally swipe away the Now Playing widget. This won’t stop the song or video that’s playing. So it’s more about letting users clean up their lock screen.

So, when will Apple release iOS 27? Unfortunately, the company hasn’t provided a solid release date yet. However, based on past releases, we expect that it will be coming very soon. Apple is expected to host an event in September to launch its new iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone Ultra.
Typically, Apple releases the next iOS major update in the weeks following the announcement. This means that we can probably expect iOS 27 to arrive towards the middle or later part of September.
