Samsung has a new smartwatch in development, and it doesn’t run on the Wear OS platform. Instead, the watch, reportedly called the Galaxy Aero by Samsung internally, would run on a different OS and be a more basic smartwatch that doesn’t offer as many features as you would find on something like the Galaxy Watch 9 or Galaxy Watch Ultra 2.
Smartwatches come in a few different forms but those running on Wear OS are the most prominent thanks to Samsung and Google. Of course, not everyone wants a smartwatch with a bunch of features. Samsung’s Galaxy Aero, based on the rumor in the report, will fill that gap.
The Samsung Galaxy Aero watch will run on RTOS software
According to SamMobile’s report, Samsung’s unannounced watch will run on RTOS or real-time operating system, which the report suggests could point to Samsung’s plans for this watch. Nothing has been confirmed as of yet. However, references to the Galaxy Aero on RTOS were found in the codebase of the Galaxy Wearable app as “galaxy_rtos_watch.”
As mentioned in the report, an RTOS watch generally uses components that aren’t as performant and the devices also typically last longer between charge cycles. For reference, Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 9 smartwatch is rated to last for up to 40 hours. An RTOS watch could last up to a week. You’ll see this kind of battery life on watches from Amazfit. The Galaxy Aero, or whatever Samsung officially calls it upon release, is suspected to have battery life similar to that according to the report.
The report doesn’t mention anything about specifics when it comes to actual hardware details or specs or features. It’s also entirely unclear if Samsung will even launch such a smartwatch. However, the report does compare the watch to the Galaxy Fit 4, which would be Samsung’s upcoming budget fitness tracker.
