Google is on the verge of adding another household name to its list of billion-user services. During Alphabet’s latest earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the Gemini mobile app has officially reached 950 million monthly active users. That massive figure places Google’s AI assistant just 50 million users shy of the landmark one-billion threshold that OpenAI’s ChatGPT crossed earlier this year.
Gemini’s rapid rise shows no signs of slowing down. The assistant’s user base has tripled over the past year, climbing from 650 million last autumn to 750 million in February, before making its latest jump. Recent industry data from Sensor Tower highlights this shift, showing ChatGPT’s market share among AI assistants slipping below 50% for the first time, while Gemini’s share expanded to nearly 28% (via TechCrunch).
Ecosystem reach and new agentic tools
Part of Gemini’s explosive adoption stems from deep integration across tech ecosystems that standalone rivals simply cannot replicate. In addition to strong adoption on Android, Gemini has gained massive traction on iOS. Standalone app downloads and Apple’s decision to rebuild Siri using Google’s underlying models have fueled this.
At the same time, Google is keeping users engaged by shipping features at a steady pace. Tools like Gemini Spark—a personalized virtual agent—and automated daily summaries give users practical reasons to open the app every day rather than relying on standard web searches.
Behind the scenes, efficiency gains in hardware and lightweight models like the new Gemini 3.6 Flash are keeping token costs down even as traffic skyrockets.
Surging infrastructure investments
Gemini’s user milestone landed alongside impressive financial figures for Alphabet’s broader AI business. Google Cloud sales jumped 82% year-over-year to $24.8 billion. This was thanks mainly to enterprise demand for AI processing power and Gemini tools.
To keep up with this staggering demand, Google is spending heavily on infrastructure. The company raised its full-year capital expenditure guidance, spending nearly $45 billion in a single quarter on data centers and custom silicon.
While that massive hardware buildout briefly pushed quarterly free cash flow into negative territory, Google is clearly betting that building out capacity today will pay off as Gemini approaches the one-billion-user mark.
