Over time after doing repetitive tasks, we develop shortcuts and rely a lot on muscle memory. This is why sometimes updates and new features are annoying because it breaks that. But the good news is that if you use Google’s Gboard app, it looks like a couple of new useful features are headed your way.
Google working on new useful Gboard features
According to an APK teardown by the folks over at Android Authority, Google is working on a couple of useful features for Gboard that could come in a future update. One of those features is a toggle for “Auto-space after suggestions.”
If you don’t use Gboard, you might not encounter this issue. Basically, if you select a suggested word, Gboard automatically adds a space after it. The idea is that this lets you continue typing but with proper punctuation. However, like we said earlier, we’ve developed our own typing habits over the years.
For some, they’re used to adding their own spaces or manually inputting punctuation like fullstops, commas, and so on. If the app does that for you, then you have to backspace and waste time. This doesn’t mean Google is ditching the feature. They’re just giving users the option to turn it off if they don’t like it.
Sign-to-text
Another feature that Android Authority discovered is Sign-to-text. Now, not all of us are well-versed in sign language. So this could be a useful accessibility feature for users who use sign language and want to convert it into text. This can come in handy when you’re texting someone, trying to search the web, reply emails, and more.
Google says that this translation relies on AI. They also reassure users that the original video you recorded never leaves your device. This means you don’t have to worry about a video sitting in Google’s servers. However, the company does note that points and certain movements are sent to its servers for processing.
We’re not sure when these features are expected to rollout. However, as it was spotted in the APK, we can only assume that a public release shouldn’t be too far off.
