Google is finally fixing the most awkward name in its entire artificial intelligence lineup. NotebookLM—the incredibly popular research companion that took the internet by storm with its viral AI-generated podcasts—is officially becoming Gemini Notebook.
The branding shakeup, which Google announced today, is a welcome change. The “LM” in the old name stood for “language model,” a redundant bit of tech jargon that made a consumer-friendly app sound like a dry computer science project. The firm also updated the app’s logo with the familiar blue-and-purple Gemini gradient.
But this update is about much more than just a fresh coat of paint. Along with the new name, Google is introducing deep ecosystem integrations and rolling out highly anticipated premium features.
Coding sandboxes and search integration
For power users, the biggest news is the arrival of the Gemini 3.5 and Antigravity engine upgrade. Initially reserved for top-tier AI Ultra subscribers last month, this powerful backend upgrade is officially making its way to Google AI Pro subscribers on the web over the coming weeks.
With this engine upgrade, every project folder inside Gemini Notebook will connect to its own secure, isolated cloud computer. This allows the AI to natively write and execute code in real time, making it significantly easier to perform complex data analysis grounded entirely in your uploaded source documents.
Additionally, Google is working on breaking the tool out of its standalone silo. While you can already access your research folders directly inside the standard Gemini app, Google announced that your active notebooks will soon be accessible directly within Google Search’s AI Mode. This integration will allow you to pull up your curated study guides and research notes without ever leaving your active search queries.
A runaway hit
Google originally unveiled the project back at I/O 2023 under the codename “Project Tailwind” before launching it to the public. Since then, the tool has gained a massive following, primarily thanks to its ability to turn messy PDFs, slides, and web links into polished audio overviews, slideshows, and quick summaries. Google shared that the platform now boasts over 30 million active users. Plus, more than 600,000 organizations worldwide actively use it.
