If you picked up a Flaunt MagSafe Battery Charger recently, stop what you’re doing and go check the back of it. Flaunt just issued a recall on its power bank, and you need to pay attention to it.
The recall covers a specific model, the MagSafe Battery Charger power banks with model number E33A, and it was sold in four colorways including melon, black, lavender, and white. If your charger doesn’t have that model number stamped on the back, you’re in the clear. If it does, this is not a “keep using it and see what happens” situation.
The reason behind the recall is the same story we keep seeing pop up across the power bank category. The lithium-ion battery inside these chargers has the potential to overheat and ignite, creating a real risk of serious injury or death from fire and burn hazards. According to the CPSC’s official recall notice, Flaunt has already fielded reports of burns to a consumer’s hand and arm, along with several cases of minor property damage.
Here’s the process if you own one. Write your initials and the word “Recalled” on the front of the charger with a permanent marker, snap photos of the front and back, and register through Flaunt’s official recall page. Once that’s confirmed, you’ll get instructions on how to dispose of it properly, since lithium-ion batteries can’t just go in your regular trash or curbside recycling.
As for compensation, Flaunt is offering a full $65 refund or an $80 store credit, so there’s at least a little upside if you’re impacted.
The Android Headlines Take
This isn’t an isolated incident either. Power bank recalls tied to overheating batteries have been piling up lately, from Belkin’s recent recall to the ongoing fallout from Casely’s power bank issues. If you’ve got a drawer full of portable chargers, it’s worth taking five minutes to check every single one of them against the model numbers involved.
