Meta is doing everything it can to make people hate smart glasses, which is ironic given how much success they’ve had with their own smart glasses. The Financial Times is reporting that Meta is testing prototype smart glasses that record everything literally. We’re talking 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
These are called “super-sensing” glasses and would reportedly capture photos “every few seconds,” according to those familiar with the matter. The idea here is that the glasses could act as an always-on assistant and even remember things about your day, like where you left your keys.
While this sounds cool, it would be a major invasion of privacy by Meta. And given how many people are upset that these glasses even exist right now, this would not go over well. Currently, Meta’s glasses show an LED indicator when they are recording or taking a photo. Meta also recently made a change so that any tampering with that LED light will disable the camera entirely.
It is important to note that this is a current prototype, not something that is launching anytime soon, and could also be scrapped entirely.
The Android Headlines Take
There are a couple of things to keep in mind with this news. Firstly, the current battery on Meta’s smart glasses could not handle this much recording. While the second-generation Meta Ray-Bans did improve battery life quite a bit, they still can’t last a full day, never mind recording all day long. Of course, Meta could get around this by recording in lower resolution, because storage would be another issue.
Another thing to keep in mind here is that many are not too happy with Meta making smart glasses. Meta doesn’t exactly have the best track record on privacy, which is a major reason people don’t like these glasses.
