There was a time when smartphone makers were chasing the thinnest phone possible. These days, most manufacturers are fine with their devices being slightly thicker, like with the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro, which the latest rumors claim might be thicker than its predecessor.
iPhone 18 Pro could be thicker than iPhone 17
According to a post on Weibo by tipster Fixed Focus Digital, based on the leaked images from Tata, the iPhone 18 Pro might end up thicker than the iPhone 17 Pro. They claim that with the rear camera plateau, we should expect an increase in thickness of about 2mm.
Now, we’ve seen phones increase in overall thickness before. In fact, the iPhone 17 Pro measures 8.8mm thick, which is a 0.5mm increase from the iPhone 16 Pro. So, to go from 0.5mm to 2mm is quite significant. On the ruler, 2mm might seem small. However, in our hands, it might be very noticeable.
It’s actually kind of funny, especially when you consider that last year, Apple launched the iPhone Air. That was the company’s thinnest iPhone to date. So for them to follow up with a thicker iPhone seems rather odd.
Is this necessarily a bad thing?
That being said, the thickness might not be such a bad thing. This is because the thickness could be the result of an upgraded main camera. Usually when phones get thicker, it’s because of an increase in battery size or their cameras. Those are welcome upgrades. In fact, the latest rumors suggest Apple could bump the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s battery size by about 6%.
We expect that the increase in thickness also means an increase in weight. But we won’t know by how much until Apple makes the phones official. The company is currently rumored to debut its new iPhones this September. For 2026, we are expecting the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone Ultra.
The September event will also most likely see Apple debut the Apple Watch Series 12 and the Apple Watch Ultra 4. The latter is also rumored to undergo a design change since debuting about 4 years ago.
