Social media platform X is adding new recorded and video editing tools. The motive here is to encourage creators to post original content instead of just reposting. Nikita Bier, head of product at X, in a post, says that many videos from top accounts on the platform are just stolen from other users. Some even after five years after they originally went viral. The executive adds that posts containing videos make up close to half the impressions on X.
X rolls out new video editing tools to encourage original content
So by giving users a functional video editor, the company hopes that some videos on X can finally be original content that doesn’t exist on other platforms. As for the update, it brings new features, including the ability to overlay captions in multiple languages and even customize their look. Additionally, there’s a green-screen feature for adding custom backgrounds using photos from your phone’s camera roll or other X posts.
The video shared by the executive in the announcement post shows a video trimming tool. There’s also an option for automatically generating captions. The executive notes that X has plenty more updates coming to the video editor in the near future. TechCrunch reports the new video editor tools are initially available in X’s iOS app. Android users may have to wait a little, as the app is still being rebuilt.
More to come
Nikita notes that one of the priorities is to give creators the tools to create original content and reward them. Recycled content has always been a fast track to becoming viral, especially when real money is on the line. For what it’s worth, Bier, in May, said that his team had identified several large accounts that were programmatically reuploading content from smaller accounts to game the revenue share program. The post further added that X would be allocating the impressions from those posts to the original creator.
Similarly, in April, Bier announced that X was cutting back on payouts to “aggregators” sharing stolen reports and clickbait. Now, in addition to announcing the new video tools, X’s executive says that while the algorithm may take time to recognize, creators who do not recycle other people’s content will now climb faster than other accounts on the app.
