PlayStation fans aren’t happy with the brand right now for several reasons, and deleting movies that have people have purchased is now one of those reasons. Among the numerous things that Sony Interactive Entertainment (PlayStation) has done recently to upset its fanbase, this includes shutting down the live service development of beloved game Destiny 2, closing several studios, and now removing movies from the library of customers who legally purchased them on the PlayStation platform.
This is an unfortunate turn of events for anyone who has purchased digital copies of movies through this platform. As it means those purchases will just simply be gone in the coming months. Though not entirely of Sony’s doing, that isn’t making consumers any less frustrated. Sony’s contract with Studio Canal has ended, and that has led to the ending of these movies on the platform. Once the contract is completely over, Sony won’t legally be allowed to sell those movies. All of the ones being affected? Studio Canal owns the rights to those. Sony is also reportedly not offering refunds on any of this purchased content. That likely stings more than the movie removal.
Sony is essentially deleting around 500 movies from the PlayStation Store
As reported by TechRadar and confirmed by Sony’s own support website, there are around 500 movies that are being removed from people’s libraries on the PlayStation platform. If you purchased a movie from the PlayStation Store that has licensing rights owned by Studio Canal, you’ll no longer be able to watch that movie soon. Sony does note that the removals aren’t happening until September 1. So, if you have movies on your PlayStation console that you want to watch, now is the time do so, and for the next couple months, before they’re gone.
This includes a wide variety of films, such as Bridget Jones’s Diary, Carnage, King of Thieves, and several different TV series. You can find the full list on Sony’s website if you want t comb through everything. And you might want to do so if you want to be sure about losing anything.
The Android Headlines Take
While this is unfortunate, there isn’t much to be done about Sony de-listing these movies and TV shows for purchase on the PlayStation Store. Quite simply because it’s tied to a contract, and that contract, which included Sony’s licensing rights from Studio Canal, will be over. Legally, it will no longer be able to sell those movies. So, pulling them makes sense.
However, Sony likely could refund its customers. They paid for the films. And customers should be allowed to keep those. Not to mention, Sony and the PlayStation brand could do with some brownie points right now. Shutting down Destiny 2 development and stopping PC ports of its single player games haven’t exactly landed well with the gaming community. And this is only going to add to the negative outlook.
