There’s good news for potential Galaxy S27 buyers: Samsung won’t be sourcing display panels from BOE for the base Galaxy S27. There were reports that Samsung was possibly going to use BOE for the display on only the base Galaxy S27 next year. Samsung was apparently testing out its panels, but negotiations between the two sides have apparently collapsed now. Meaning that Samsung will stick with its subsidiary Samsung Display for the Galaxy S27.
This report out of Korea claims that BOE received a Request for Information (RFI) from Samsung Electronics for OLED panels for the Galaxy S27, and they launched a project dedicated to developing panels for the phone. But opinions within Samsung were divided from the start, with many execs supposedly opposed to sourcing displays for its flagship smartphones from BOE.
Obviously, Samsung Display was also unhappy with the possibility of its largest customer and majority shareholder sourcing OLED panels from one of its biggest rivals. It’s said that the pressure, along with the divided opinions within Samsung, ultimately led to the company abandoning the deal with BOE.
The Android Headlines Take
There’s good news and bad news here. With Samsung opting to keep sourcing from Samsung Display, it means buyers of the base Galaxy S27 are still going to get that great display that they know and love. But it also means that prices are likely to go up with the Galaxy S27 series, due to the ongoing RAM shortage – which a new lawsuit claims Samsung helped manufacture along with SK Hynix and Micron.
It would have been quite surprising to see BOE supplying the display for the Galaxy S27, a flagship within Samsung’s lineup. Then again, Samsung does the same thing with chips, using Qualcomm instead of its own Exynos chips most of the time. So there is precedent.
