The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is expected to come with an internal display that has 3,600nits of peak brightness. That puts it brighter than the Galaxy S26 Ultra. However, none of the new foldables are using the new Privacy Display from the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which is going to help make them look even brighter.
While 3,600nits is quite bright for a foldable, it is still not as bright as some of the competition. Motorola Razr Fold, HONOR Magic V6, and OPPO Find N6 are all over 5,000nits of peak brightness, with a few of these crossing 6,000nits.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will also have a display that is two generations newer than the Galaxy Z Fold 7. So we’re looking at a pretty solid upgrade here. That’s pretty impressive, given all of the upgrades Samsung gave us with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 last year.
The Android Headlines Take
While 3,600nits of peak brightness is great, that’s not the number we should really be looking at. Peak brightness is a number that typically only applies to one area of the screen, and is only shown in perfect lab conditions. The number that more manufacturers need to market is actually HDR brightness or High Brightness Mode (as Google refers to it).
HDR brightness is actually the brightness you’ll see across the entire display panel, and a number you’ll actually see in bright conditions. Making it a much more meaningful metric.
Using this kind of brightness on the inner display is very useful, as that is a plastic display due to its folding nature. Naturally, plastic is more reflective than glass. So making it brighter is really going to help with outdoor visibility. However, we’d still love to see Samsung use an anti-reflective layer like OPPO has done on the Find N6.
