Apple has given Samsung the OK to start manufacturing the OLED panels needed for the iPhone Fold. With the exclusive deal with Samsung expected to churn out about 3 million units for this year’s initial supply.
The panel that Apple is getting from Samsung has some of the most advanced technologies included, like Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE) paired with M16. However, the iPhone Fold cannot enter timely production due to its 3D printed hinge issue.
Apple is using a liquid metal 3D printed hinge, which would be the first foldable to use this. While others, namely OPPO, have used 3D printed parts for its foldables, it wasn’t an entire hinge. But it looks like the hinge is still exhibiting rattling sounds when assembled. This has been shot down by a tipster, but brought up again by Korean media.
September is still the launch month being discussed for the iPhone Fold, but obtaining stability for the hinges is an area where Apple is having a lot of problems right now. Obviously, a low-quality hinge will affect the crease visibility, but also impact the feel of opening and closing the iPhone Fold. Something that Apple can’t really do with the rumored pricing for the iPhone Fold.
So many conflicting rumors, what should you believe?
It’s important to remember that some tipsters may be working off of older information, while others have newer information. Which would explain the conflicting rumors we’re seeing these days. But at this point, we just have to wait and see what’s correct and what’s not.
The iPhone Fold is expected to be announced in September with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Though it might not go on sale right away. Typically, when Apple releases a new model like this, it gets delayed a couple of weeks. Like the iPhone X, iPhone 12 Mini, and iPhone 14 Plus, for example.
