Are you thinking about getting the new iPhone 18 series? If you are, then prepare to fork out a lot more money for it. This is because according to the latest reports, there are some who believe the price of the iPhone 18 Pro could start at a minimum of $1,299.
iPhone 18 Pro price could start much higher
This is according to a report from Nicole Nguyen and Rolfe Winkler at The Wall Street Journal. Note that the price of the iPhone 18 Pro from the report isn’t necessarily a leak or a rumor, but rather it is based on internal analysis along with pricing insights from research firm TechInsights. This means that it isn’t necessarily guaranteed to be correct. However, there is a chance it could be.
If accurate, the minimum price of $1,299 makes it $200 more expensive than the current iPhone 17 Pro. And that’s quite a substantial jump. We know that phone makers increase prices every now and then, but a ~20% increase is huge. So, how did they arrive at that conclusion?
According to the report, TechInsights believes Apple has a profit margin of about 47% for the iPhone 17 Pro. In order to maintain those margins, especially with the ongoing memory crisis which has driven up the price of RAM, Apple would need to charge $1,371. However, since Apple prefers standardized pricing, they might price it at $1,299, giving them a 44% gross profit.
That makes sense, but will they?
The analysis seems sound, at least from a business perspective. If Apple wants to keep investors happy, they need to maintain or increase their profits. But at the same time, a huge price jump like that could drive customers away.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumors that Apple could increase its prices, but at the same time, there have been reports suggesting that Apple could also try to negotiate for better RAM prices with its suppliers. However, there are also reports that claim at least for the base iPhone 18, Apple could absorb the RAM price increase.
This makes sense too, especially for the long-term. Apple keeping the price the same means it won’t alienate new or returning customers. It would also allow the company to lock customers into its ecosystem and earn money off subscriptions from services like iCloud, Apple One, and app purchases.
It’s a tough call, and we’ll have to wait until September to see which one Apple makes.
