In an AI-related surprise development, Noam Shazeer, the vice president of engineering at Google and a primary co-lead over the Gemini models, announced on X that he is leaving the company to join main rival OpenAI. Shazeer described the departure as a difficult decision, expressing massive pride in the Google team while noting his excitement to work alongside the group behind ChatGPT.
The high-profile exit marks a big twist in the tech landscape. Shazeer initially worked as a software engineer at the search giant from 2000 until 2021. He then left the company alongside researcher Daniel De Freitas after executives hesitated to pursue a chatbot project they aggressively championed. The duo went on to establish Character.AI, which rapidly grew into one of the most visible AI startups.
The multibillion-dollar talent loop
Recognizing the massive value of his expertise, Google executed a complex strategy to bring the talent back to the company. Google orchestrated a massive $2.7 billion licensing agreement with Character.AI to secure non-exclusive rights to its underlying technology. A core stipulation of that massive payout required Shazeer to return to Google. Management placed him and De Freitas back inside the elite DeepMind AI unit.
By August 2024, Shazeer was working as a VP of engineering and steering the core direction of the Gemini models. His contributions to the industry are substantial. A landmark 2017 research paper he co-authored fundamentally laid the architectural groundwork for modern large language models.
Given this legacy, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly welcomed the hire on X. He stated that Shazeer represents one of the specific minds he has wanted to partner with since the very inception of OpenAI.
A shifting landscape for industry leaders
The sudden talent drain occurs at a critical juncture for both tech heavyweights. Google recently showcased major product milestones at its annual I/O developer conference. The firm rolled out its Gemini 3.5 Flash architecture and the conversational Gemini Spark AI agent. In a statement provided to Reuters, Google expressed gratitude for Shazeer’s deep contributions to the platform over his multiple decades of service.
Meanwhile, OpenAI is preparing for significant corporate milestones after confidentially filing for an initial public offering earlier this month. Major entities like Meta, Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI regularly offer massive compensation packages and formulate elaborate corporate acquisitions simply to trade top-tier research brains.
