Japanese brand Sharp has unveiled two new wearables, including its first smartwatch and a Smart Ring. The Karada Mate Watch comes with all the features you’d expect in a smartwatch, like a heart rate monitor, step counting, sleep tracking, and others. It gets a round dial with a stainless steel case and comes in two colour choices. Meanwhile, the Sharp Karada Mate Ring features a titanium case and weighs up to 3.1 grams depending on size.
Sharp expands its portfolio with a new smartwatch and smart ring
The Sharp Karada Mate Watch features calorie tracking, but it does more. In addition to tracking calories burned through active and passive activity, it also tracks calories consumed in the form of food and drinks. There’s a bioelectrical impedance sensor (BIA), which measures changes in water and sugar levels in the body. This enables the smartwatch to estimate how many calories have been consumed.Â
The smartwatch also surfaces a graphical comparison of calorie intake and calories burned. This can be handy for someone who’s trying to gain or lose weight. Additionally, the watch will push alerts if your water intake is not enough.Â
As for the regular specs, it gets a round 1.32-inch OLED display with an always-on feature, Corning Gorilla Glass 5, and 466 x 466-pixel resolution. There’s an ambient light sensor and an accelerometer, a GPS module, and a skin temperature sensor. It offers heart rate and SpO2 sensors. The smartwatch is water-resistant up to 5 ATM. It gets Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity and is compatible with Android and iOS.
Sharp Karada Mate Ring offers up to 14 days of battery
Then there’s the Sharp Karada Mate Ring, which promises up to 14 days of battery life. The ring is water-resistant up to 10 ATM, meaning you can wear it even while swimming. It gets a Duratect coating, which makes the surface scratch-resistant. The smart ring has a total of four sensors: a heart rate sensor, an SpO2 sensor, a skin temperature sensor, and an accelerometer. The Karada Mate Ring supports sleep tracking, a feature that’s usually found on most smart rings.
All the regular tracking features work without a subscription, but the nutrition tracking feature offered via the companion app costs approx $3.75 per month. As you’d expect, this allows you to scan food with a smartphone camera and record its nutrition values. Through the paid plan, users will receive advice supervised by a registered dietitian. This will cover four aspects: diet, sleep, exercise, and physical condition based on your measured data. The Karada Mate Ring gets Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity and is compatible with Android and iPhones.
Price, availability
The Sharp Karada Mate Watch will cost Â¥59,400 (~$371) and will be available in Japan from July 9th in gold and silver shades. On the other hand, the Sharp Karada Mate Ring costs Â¥44,800 (~$280). It’ll also be available in Japan from July 9th in ring sizes 4 through 13. It comes in glossy gold and matte silver shades. The company hasn’t mentioned anything about their global availability.Â
