Apple recently announced its latest iOS 27 operating system. It brings several new Apple Intelligence features; however, not every iPhone will receive those. In a move that sounds familiar, the Cupertino tech giant is once again limiting some advanced AI features to its more powerful devices. The standard iPhone 17, despite being the latest model, won’t receive certain AI features of iOS 27.
iPhone 17 won’t get all the AI features on iOS 27 due to ‘hardware limitations’
This is not the first time Apple has restricted certain features for its latest device. Back in June 2024, when the Apple Intelligence was introduced with iOS 18, the support was limited to the Pro and the Pro Max devices. The base model and the Plus model were left out. The move shocked many users who expected the software features to work across the latest models.
Apple said that they had to cut down the support due to hardware limitations. The initial build of the Apple Intelligence required at least 8GB of RAM to run on-device AI features. Since the base and the Plus model didn’t have enough RAM, they were marked ineligible. The users thought it may be a ‘one-time’ thing and that they won’t experience something similar in the future. However, the latest iOS 27 update seems to continue the pattern.
Memory limitations once again make the base model feel left out
The latest iOS 27 update introduces several new AI features. However, two new major AI features will be absent on the iPhone 17. One is the company’s most powerful on-device AI model, while the other is a new Siri AI voice customization feature. Both features will only work on the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air.
The reason behind the limitation once again comes down to the memory. The standard iPhone 17 has 8GB of RAM, whereas the Air and the Pro models have 12GB. Hopefully, this will be the last time a latest model sees feature cuts because of hardware restrictions.
