Xbox is in a bit of a state of flux at the moment as it prepares to shift a whole bunch of things around, and that will apparently lead to Microsoft’s decision to dissolve Xbox into Windows, according to former Sony Interactive Entertainment President Shuhei Yoshida. On the morning of June 12, Yoshida tweeted out that “Xbox will dissolve into Windows, and it’s Microsoft’s strength.”
This seems to suggest that Microsoft is planning to roll the platform into Windows in some way, shape, or form. It’s also important to note that Yoshida doesn’t really clarify what this statement means, and it should also be noted that this isn’t a statement of fact. Yoshida isn’t telling people about some inside information that he knows about Microsoft’s plans. He’s merely making an observation about something he believes is possible, likely based on his many years of experience in the industry.
Xbox could “dissolve into Windows” but that doesn’t mean that it will disappear
There’s a lot of confusion about what Yoshida’s statement is actually saying. And since Yoshida hasn’t elaborated on what he meant, we can only really infer what he meant. That being said, I think this is more of a statement that Microsoft is planning to roll more of Xbox into the Windows platform and vice versa. I do not think this is Yoshida saying he believes the Xbox platform is going to die.
If you consider the ASUS Xbox ROG Ally X, and now all Windows handhelds thanks to the latest software updates, have the Xbox mode, it seems more likely that this is what he might be referencing. Or perhaps something akin to that. Perhaps that Microsoft’s strategy for the Xbox platform is changing. Microsoft has been moving away from the traditional console model for a while. The Xbox Play Anywhere initiative saw to that.
Xbox’s new CEO, Asha Sharma, is attempting to restore some of that lost Xbox luster. This has included decisions like removing future Call of Duty titles from Xbox Game Pass as a day one game, and bringing back more console-exclusives. But Sharma has also recently stated that the team will have to take a good hard look at the current strategy for Xbox consoles. Mainly because components are expensive and Sharma wants to ensure that Xbox Project Helix will be an affordable way to play games.
