Apple has never really been one to chase RAM on its iPhones. But 8GB of RAM only gets you so far, and with the new Siri AI requirements, Apple needs to ensure that upcoming products can run it. But at the same time, the memory crisis has driven the price of RAM up considerably, so now Apple has to make a decision on the RAM for the base iPhone 18.
iPhone 18 RAM could see Apple compromise
According to a post on X by Schrodinger, Apple is stuck trying to decide what to do with the base iPhone 18 RAM situation. It seems that Apple has two choices: it can either continue using 8GB of RAM and keep the current M14 display panel technology, or it can bump it to 12GB of RAM, but downgrade to M12+ panels.
For a bit of context, Apple’s newer generation iPhones, the iPhone 16 onwards, uses the Samsung-made M14 panels. However, older models like the iPhone 14 Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone 15 series used the M12. This M12+ is said to be a newer, more cost-effective, and cheaper variant of that panel. This means that Apple would technically be downgrading the display, but iPhone 18 users get more RAM instead.
It’s a no-brainer
Like we said, Apple has a choice to make, but we think it’s an easy one. With all the fuss Apple made about its overhaul of Apple Intelligence and the deal they struck with Google for its new Siri, going with more RAM is the obvious choice.
WWDC 2026 was very different from past WWDC events. In the past, Apple would spend a lot of time talking about new features of its OS. This year, they kind of glossed over it, and spent the majority of the time talking up its AI features. This means that Apple definitely views AI as its next big play (as are pretty much every tech company out there).
So, launching the base iPhone 18 in 2027 that cannot run or make full use of Apple Intelligence or Siri is a very bad look. Imagine, buying a new phone that launched in 2027, but yet cannot run the native AI systems Apple built into the operating system and marketed so heavily.
Plus, to be honest, the M12 panels were perfectly fine and great when they launched. If the M12+ is anything like the M12, it’s hardly a downgrade.
