Back in April, Google announced that YouTube Premium would be getting a price hike, which was immediately pushed onto new subscribers. But existing subscribers had until June 8th before the price hike hit them. And today is that day.
Just a refresher: YouTube Premium prices are going up by $1 to $4 per month. Here’s how each plan shakes out now:
- YouTube Premium Student: $8.99/month (was $7.99/month)
- YouTube Premium Individual: $15.99 (was $13.99)
- YouTube Premium Family: $26.99 (was $22.99)
Also, keep in mind that if you are subscribing from your iPhone, through the app, these prices are likely even higher, as Google and other companies have started to tack on the 30% commission that Apple takes, into their prices. So, these prices on iOS through the YouTube app are $11.99 for Student, $20.99 for Individual, and $34.99 for the Family plan. That’s quite a price bump.
If you are looking to subscribe through your phone, make sure to go to the YouTube website to subscribe. So you get the regular price.
Google is raising prices to help further support creators
YouTube Premium is one of those subscriptions that I will never get rid of. Considering how much YouTube I watch, and how many ads are now on YouTube, it really doesn’t make sense to get rid of it. Especially since YouTube Music is also included at this price.
Google said, back in April, that the reason for the price increase was so it could “continue to improve Premium and support the creators and artists you watch on YouTube.” Of course, most creators make money from Ads, which are not shown to Premium users. Instead, Creators get a cut of your Premium subscription each month, depending on how much you watch. So this will make that pool larger for creators.
YouTube is also cracking down pretty heavily on ad-blockers.
