Samsung appears to be planning a significant change in how it powers its next generation of foldable smartphones. A fresh report suggests the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 8 will abandon a single-processor setup in favor of a regional, dual-chip strategy, potentially drawing on both Qualcomm’s Snapdragon and Samsung’s own Exynos chips. The move would mirror the approach Samsung uses for its traditional Galaxy S flagship devices.
A history of processor flipping
To understand why this is a big deal, you have to look at the history of the hardware. From the very first model launched in 2020 all the way through the Galaxy Z Flip 6, Samsung equipped its clamshell foldables exclusively with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors. That trend broke with the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and FE. These models equipped Samsung’s in-house Exynos 2500 and 2400 chips on a global scale.

A shift like this does not happen by accident. Industry analysts point straight to manufacturing budgets within Samsung’s MX division. Building cutting-edge 2nm silicon like the Exynos 2600 is an incredibly expensive endeavor. Forcing that high-cost processor into every single global unit would price the phone out of the market.
To balance the checkbook, Samsung needs to diversify its components. Fortunately for Samsung, Qualcomm stepped in to offer highly favorable pricing on its latest Snapdragon batches. The alleged dual-chip strategy could help Samsung protect its profit margins without massive price hikes.
Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy Z Flip 8 on July 22.
