Companies like Samsung make their own display, and as such, their phones usually pack the latest in display tech. Apple, on the other hand, goes at their own pace. Remember how long it took before Apple finally adopted OLED? Unfortunately, it looks like Apple’s not in any particular rush again, because the latest reports suggest the iPhone 18 Pro might not use the latest OLED technology.
iPhone 18 Pro might miss out on tandem OLED display
According to a report by South Korean publication ETNews, Apple might not use tandem OLED display tech for the iPhone 18 Pro. Now, Apple has used the tech before. It made its debut in the M4 iPad Pro. However, the next Apple product to use the tech won’t be the iPhone 18 Pro. Instead, it will go to the upcoming M6 MacBook Pro.
It also looks like Apple’s Chinese rivals could beat them to the punch, where the report suggests that BOE is making tandem OLED panels and that OPPO could be one of their first customers.
For those wondering, tandem OLED is a newer form of OLED technology. It has multiple benefits, such as a longer lifespan and can get brighter compared to single-layer panels. The reason Apple is holding back is because this isn’t a priority for the company right now. Instead, Apple wants to focus on revamping the thermal management of its iPhones before adopting the tech, which might only arrive in 2028.
This also means that the 20th anniversary iPhone could continue using current OLED technology.Â
Is that necessarily a bad thing?
That being said, Apple delaying the adoption isn’t the worst thing. Like we said, Apple has typically been slow to adopt new tech. Look how many years have passed before Apple is finally stepping into the ring with its own foldable phone. Plus, the current iPhones already look pretty good display-wise, so upgrading to a tandem OLED might not bring about noticeable benefits.
Also, adopting new tech is also typically more expensive. Apple waiting it out for a few years could bring the price down. We’re also facing a memory crisis, so the last thing Apple needs is an increase in production costs.
