Indoor security cameras are great for keeping an eye on things inside the home while you’re away. For pet owners, it’s also a good way to see if your furry friend is up to no good or sneaking into the pantry. Now, it looks like Google is supercharging Google Home with a couple of new features, one of which is Pet Memory and the other being Ask Home.
Google Home gets new Pet Memory feature
The feature works with indoor Nest cameras and select Gemini built-in cameras. Once you add your pet’s name and type through Ask Home in the Google Home app, your camera starts using that information in its notifications. So that generic “a dog is walking in the kitchen” alert becomes “Fido is walking in the kitchen.” Google says Pet Memory also cuts down on misidentifications. That being said, we should note that the Google Home Pet Memory feature requires the Advanced plan of Google Home Premium to use.
The same update also expands Ask Home via voice to all markets where Gemini for Home is supported. That now covers over 20 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and several European markets. Germany also joins the Gemini for Home early access with this update. For those unfamiliar, Ask Home lets you ask your smart speakers and displays questions about your home, like checking camera history or controlling devices with natural language.
How to set it up?
To get Google Home Pet Memory working, open the Google Home app and head to Ask Home. From there, enter your pet’s name and type. Your cameras take it from there.
However, like we said, there is a subscription requirement. You’ll need the Advanced tier of Google Home Premium (formerly known as Nest Aware), which sits above the base plan. If you’re already there, the feature is rolling out now for early access users.
Ask Home has been building out steadily as part of Google’s wider Gemini push for the Home platform. As for Pet Memory, that feels like a nice little addition for anyone who uses indoor cameras to check on their pets. Not really groundbreaking, but a nice way to make your pets really feel like family.
