Apple might be preparing a free tier of Apple Music. Most of Apple Music’s competitors do already offer a free tier of service, like Spotify and YouTube Music. But Apple Music has always had paid tiers, with the current Individual tier costing $10.99 per month.
Now, code found in the latest Apple Music for Android beta points to a potentially free or lower-cost option. The line of code indicates “can’t skip any more tracks” as well as another line saying “Premium access required”. Which leads us to believe that Apple is either prepping a free tier that would be ad-supported, or a cheaper tier that would also likely be ad-supported.
Many already believe that Apple Music is the best streaming service on the market right now, and I have to agree. They are one of the cheaper options (which is a surprise given its Apple), they also have some of the best sound quality with Spatial Audio.
This change could be announced next week at WWDC
Next week, Apple is going to be holding its own developer conference, WWDC. This is where they typically announce the next versions of all of its operating systems. The thing with Apple is, apps like Apple Music are tied to the OS, and not available separately through the App Store like it is on Android. So this update and new tier could be part of iOS 27, which is expected to be announced at WWDC next week.
This could be a way for Apple to add more users to its service and rake in more service revenue. Even at a cheaper rate, say $3.99 or $4.99 per month, this could bring in a ton of new users. And also add more ad revenue for Apple. Apple is also bringing ads to Maps very soon. So it looks like their ad business could get a big bump in the future.
