Intel isn’t really a player in the handheld gaming PC market, but that’s changing with the newly-announced Acer Predator Atlas 8, which will be powered by two different handheld-specific Intel chips: The Arc G3 Extreme, and the Arc B390.
Thus far most of the handhelds have been powered by variations of chips made by AMD. Intel unveiled its new handheld chips this morning, saying that they would “set a new standard for handheld PC gaming.” The Atlas 8 isn’t the first handheld that Acer has announced. It launched the Nitro Blaze 7 back in 2024 and announced two new models at CES 2025. The Predator Atlas 8, however, seems like it might be a more powerful option, if no other reason than the fact that it’s part of Acer’s Predator line, which is typically more powerful than its Nitro line of gaming hardware. Which its past handhelds were a part of.
The Acer Predator Atlas 8 handheld will launch in October
There’s about a four-month wait before these hit shelves. But even when they do, don’t expect them to be inexpensive. Especially if Valve’s recent Steam Deck price hike is anything to go by. Acer doesn’t mention a price, to be clear. That being said, every type of component that makes up a handheld gaming PC seems to have gone up in price, which has resulted in the handhelds themselves going up in price for consumers. So, the same is likely to happen here.
In terms of other specs, the Predator Atlas 8 will feature up to 24GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. It’ll also have an 80Wh battery inside. It will come in two variations, and both will feature the same battery. Weight, however, will differ slightly with Acer confirming that one weighs under 810g, while the other weighs under 770g.
The handheld will support Bluetooth 5.4 and Wi-Fi 7 for connectivity options. Some of the real magic seems to be in the handheld’s AeroBlade Cooling System. This is comprised of a dual-fan design inspired by Acer’s Predator laptop portfolio and uses a metal Predator AeroBlade fan with 89 blades. This is paired with a second fan made from plastic that Acer says should result in hot air being allowed to exit faster. Acer doesn’t include Hal Effect joysticks. But it does include Hall Effect Triggers. Those triggers also have adjustable hair-trigger stops for more precise firing.
