While gamers continue to lament about a number of things regarding the industry, such as layoffs, high-priced gaming PCs, and the cost of components, and the recent announcement about Bungie ending live service on Destiny 2, the internal price of the Steam Machine can be added to the list. While likely not shocking, the cost of the Steam Machine is probably not going to be in the realm of affordable for wide range of gamers.
If that ends up being the case, that will be a shame. As Valve seemingly planned it to be a more affordable way to get a gaming PC into the living room. The Steam Machine is set to be a sort of console-like experience for the gaming PC. Tied directly to Steam, navigated with a controller, and somewhat customizable. Because the Steam Deck was such an affordable gaming handheld when it launched, everyone thought the Steam Machine was going to follow in its footsteps on that front. That probably isn’t happening.
The Steam Machine internal price was rumored to have passed the Steam Deck’s new $949 price tag months ago
If you’ve been watching the news surrounding Valve this week, then you’ve seen the new Steam Deck price. It starts at $789 for the 512GB model. It goes all the way up to $949 for the 1TB model. Both have OLED displays as the LCD model was pulled a while back. Although Valve still has refurbished ones for sale, and this is now the cheapest way to get a Steam Deck straight from Valve.
According to a new rumor from Brad Lynch on X, Valve decided on the new, more expensive internal price for the Steam Machine months ago. About two months ago to be exact. It’s worth noting that Lynch says you should take this with a grain of salt. Still, this is obviously well ahead of Valve’s decision to increase the cost of a Steam Deck. The point is, if you think the Steam Deck price is bad now, just wait for the Steam Machine. I said yesterday that the increase of the Steam Deck signaled ill tidings for the Steam Machine’s price. And that seems to be the case.
The Steam Machine is supposed to be six times more powerful than the Steam Deck. And with that kind of performance jump, a higher price is inevitable. Take that into consideration with the memory crisis, and a price under $1,000 just doesn’t seem plausible.
