Meta’s products like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp have been free for the most part. But now, it looks like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are about to get new subscription plans as Meta plans to monetize its products even further.
Subscriptions are coming to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp
According to a video announcement on Instagram by Meta’s head of product, Naomi Gleit, she confirmed that the company plans to introduce new subscription plans for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Now, to be clear, these platforms will continue to be free. Instead, these subscriptions are merely addons that will enhance the overall experience. This is part of Meta’s “Plus” subscriptions and will give users extra features. For instance, Facebook Plus and Instagram Plus users will get exclusive features. This includes advanced Story insights like rewatch counts. They can even extend Stories beyond the 24-hour limit.
They will also be able to preview their Stories before posting. This gives creators a chance to see what their Stories look like if it were a live post. There is also some extra stuff like Super Heart animated reactions, custom app icons, custom font, and so on.
As for WhatsApp Plus, this is something we’ve heard about before. Users who subscribe can set custom ringtones, app themes, support for more pinned chats, additional sticker packs, and more.
How much do these subscriptions cost?
For now, all these subscriptions are standalone offerings. This means you’ll have to subscribe to each if you are using all of these services. They are priced at $3.99 a month for Instagram Plus, $3.99 a month for Facebook Plus, and $2.99 for WhatsApp Plus. We’re not sure if there are plans for a cheaper bundled subscription plan in the future, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Another thing worth noting is that these new Plus plans exist separate from Meta Verified. That is a completely separate subscription focused on verification and impersonation protection. Instead, Meta frames these Plus subscriptions as features for power users looking to get more out of these apps.
Beyond these plans, TechCrunch reports that Meta is testing more plans in the future. These plans are aimed at Meta AI users. Testing is expected to kick off next month in select regions. Then there are also plans aimed specifically at creators and businesses, and will begin testing later this week in select regions.
