Waking up in the middle of the night to a weird noise is scary enough, but one smartphone owner recently lived through a literal nightmare. A Canadian user shared a terrifying story on Reddit after her Samsung Galaxy S25 FE completely exploded while charging overnight right next to her bed. The blast left her with minor burns, a smoke-damaged room, and a pretty shaken-up family.
Samsung Galaxy S25 FE explodes on mattress in Canada
According to her post, she was fast asleep next to her eight-year-old son when loud popping sounds woke her up. She described the scene as looking like indoor fireworks, with glowing plastic and metal shrapnel flying all over the bedroom. The phone’s battery had suffered a severe thermal runaway event. This basically means the lithium-ion cell overheated uncontrollably and escalated into a fire.
The smoke was so thick that the local fire department had to step in. While everyone luckily escaped major injuries, the user did get her hair singed and suffered a small burn on her neck. Her son wasn’t physically hurt, but he was understandably traumatized by the whole thing (via Android Authority).
The perfect recipe for trapped heat
While a smartphone battery should never fail this violently, the way the phone was being charged created a worst-case scenario. The user admitted she left the Galaxy S25 FE charging directly on the mattress. On top of that, the phone was tucked inside a thick leather wallet case—which also contained loose metal coins.
Modern phones have built-in safety triggers to shut down when they get too hot. However, this setup completely blocked them. Thick leather cases act like a heavy jacket, trapping the phone’s heat. When you place that on a soft mattress, there is absolutely nowhere for the heat to escape. Add loose coins into the mix, and you get a recipe for unpredictable electrical behavior. For the record, she was using the original Samsung cable hooked up to a reputable third-party 20W charger.
Keep calm and change your habits
This marks the third time this year we’ve seen a recent Samsung flagship catch fire. We also saw reports involving a Galaxy S25 Plus and a Galaxy S24. In the previous S25 Plus case, Samsung eventually claimed external force caused the rupture, though the family disagreed. For this new incident, the user got a support ticket number from Samsung but hasn’t heard back yet.
Even though these headlines sound alarming, there is absolutely no reason to panic. Samsung has shipped tens of millions of Galaxy S25 devices globally, meaning the actual failure rate is microscopic. This is a strictly isolated case.
However, it is a great reminder to practice safe charging. Always place your phone on a hard, flat surface so it can breathe, keep metal objects away from your cables, and avoid leaving it wrapped in thick cases on your bed overnight.
