The PS6 is not going to see a launch delay according to an insider who believes Sony will continue its strategy for the release, as it will need to move forward and get the console into the hands of consumers. Much is unclear about Sony’s next-generation console, but what seems to be clear is that Sony will not be changing its strategy for the specs of the PS6 based on more expensive components.
Initial rumors suggested that the PS6 would come with about 30GB-32GB of RAM. Following several months of the memory crisis that has seen RAM prices shoot up into the stratosphere for both consumers and manufacturers, new rumors started to circulate that Sony would lower the amount of RAM in the PS6 to 24GB to account for rising costs. That might not be the case though.
The PS6 launch delay isn’t happening because Sony “needs to get to next-gen”
While Sony hasn’t officially announced the PS6 yet, the console is coming, and the company needs to get to it. “Sony needs to get to next-gen,” Moore’s Law is Dead says, and that’s a statement that rings true. In the recent Broken Silicon podcast, it’s mentioned that Sony’s PS5 sales are collapsing. This is used as a big reason for why Sony needs to get to next-gen. Because it needs to get sales of its next console and excitement for its PlayStation brand back up.
PS5 sales have reportedly dipped, with Sony confirming that sales are down because of increased prices on the console due higher RAM prices, which led to more expensive manufacturing costs for the company. With regard to specs, it’s mentioned that Sony wouldn’t dump down to 24GB of RAM in the PS6 because it already has hardware that will feature this amount: the rumored PS6 handheld, which has been said to come with 24GB of RAM as a lower-powered PS6 option. Speculation is that Sony still plans to launch the PS6 in 2027.
