Apple will introduce its next software versions for its iPads and iPhones at WWDC next month. These versions could be called iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. A lot is riding on Apple this time, considering the promised revamped Siri is still not here, and the competition is racing ahead with a variety of on-device AI features. A new report from Bloomberg sheds some light on what to expect from the new updates, which include a new AI writing tools feature for your iPhone.
Apple may bring new AI writing tools to iPhone with iOS 27
Apple is preparing a wave of new AI features for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, including a new custom wallpaper generator and an option to automatically create system-wide shortcuts using natural language, as per Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter. This comes as part of Apple’s efforts to narrow the gap with capabilities available on rival devices.
With iOS 27, the tech giant will finally catch up with the competition, which already offers an AI-assisted writing feature. The company is reportedly testing a “Write With Siri” toggle that will appear at the top of the keyboard. Users will also see a new “Help Me Write” button when they activate Siri while working in the text field.
iOS 27 will include a more powerful grammar checker, similar to Grammarly, which is a popular third-party service. AI will go through your text and apparently suggest changes. The user can accept individual suggestions, approve all changes, or ignore them altogether. There will also be controls to pause grammar check and navigate between flagged sections of the text.
Shortcuts upgrade and wallpaper generator
Furthermore, Shortcuts is also getting a major upgrade in iOS 27. It will reportedly let users create shortcuts simply by describing in natural language what they want them to do. The updated Shortcuts app will reportedly show users a prompt asking, “What do you want your shortcut to do?” along with a text field to describe the request. The system will build and install the shortcut on the device. The shortcut will be immediately available for use. In comparison, shortcut creation is mostly done manually now.
Lastly, there’s the wallpaper generator using AI. It reportedly builds on the Image Playground app and will show up as a new option in the wallpaper picker. The report notes that users can create custom lock screen and home screen wallpapers using this new Image Playground-powered feature.
Apple may preview these new features at the WWDC keynote, which is taking place on June 8th.
