Google wants to make the process of finding a specific mobile app more intuitive. To make this process more intuitive, Google used its annual I/O conference to announce a comprehensive design overhaul for the Play Store with a touch of artificial intelligence power, including “Ask Play” conversational search.
Google Play Store AI upgrades bring “Ask Play” conversational search
The most noticeable change arriving on Android screens is a brand-new search overlay called Ask Play. Building on basic text matching, this tool introduces a chat interface that acts like a conversational shopping assistant. Instead of repeating short search phrases, users can describe complex needs in plain language, ask follow-up questions, and receive personalized recommendations. They’ll also get a quick text summary of why a specific app fits their query.
To complement this conversational approach, Google is betting on the popular vertical video feeds approach with the Play Shorts launch. This full-screen portrait feed allows users in the United States to watch short video loops showcasing a game or application’s actual functionality before committing to a download. Furthermore, the company is allowing the standalone Gemini app to natively suggest Android software and deep-link directly into movie and live sports streams.
Automating backend tasks and managing churn
The tech giant is also using its Gemini model to simplify backend management for mobile developers. A new integration inside the Play Console allows creators to drop in a single spreadsheet or document to automatically translate entire application descriptions into multiple languages simultaneously. Similarly, when a particular search term begins trending, Gemini can auto-generate a tailored store listing focused on that specific keyword with a single click.
Plus, the platform is making substantial shifts to how it handles subscription revenue and digital retention. To address involuntary cancellations caused by temporary issues like expired credit cards, Google has officially extended its default payment recovery window from 30 days to 60 days. This gives users twice as much time to update their billing profiles without losing active premium access. Additionally, a new subscription management tool will soon allow developers to present instant plan-downgrade alternatives the exact moment a customer attempts to hit a cancel button.
Centralized security reporting
To close out the platform upgrades, Google launched a dedicated security hub named the Protected with Play dashboard. This hub lets development teams configure their digital rights management. They can also monitor incoming device integrity flags in real time to catch bad actors faster. Google revealed that its internal anti-spam tools managed to wipe out 160 million fraudulent ratings and reviews over the past calendar year alone.
