The race to automate software development just gained a heavy-hitting—and expensive—new contender. Elon Musk‘s AI startup, xAI, recently unveiled Grok Build, its first dedicated AI coding agent. This launch marks a major milestone for the company. Musk himself admitted the company has been lagging behind leaders like Anthropic and OpenAI in the professional coding space. Now, xAI is finally fixing this.
xAI challenges Anthropic with Grok Build AI coding tool
Grok Build is not your average chatbot. xAI describes it as a powerful Command Line Interface (CLI) designed for complex software engineering tasks. Unlike standard models which only suggest code snippets, this agent can handle multi-step workflows. One of its standout features is a “plan mode,” which allows developers to review, edit, and approve a logical plan before the AI executes any changes to the codebase.
However, accessing the tool is not cheap at all. Currently in early beta, Grok Build is only available to SuperGrok Heavy subscribers—a tier that starts at $300 month. Eligible users can download the tool directly from the xAI website.
The “SpaceXAI” era
The timing of this release is no coincidence. Following xAI’s acquisition by SpaceX in February, the combined entity—now often referred to as SpaceXAI—is undergoing a massive structural overhaul. After a string of high-profile departures, the company is being “rebuilt from the foundations up,” Musk said recently. This includes several founding members and key engineers.
This merger brings unique advantages, such as the potential for space-based data centers powered by SpaceX’s massive satellite network. To bolster its coding capabilities, xAI also recently inked a partnership with the AI coding firm Cursor. The latter allows engineers from both teams to collaborate on the Colossus supercomputer.
The road ahead
Despite its ambitious goals, Grok Build enters a market where reputation matters as much as performance. The startup is working hard to move past previous controversies regarding content filters and data handling. Executives at xAI have reportedly urged staff to prioritize matching the performance of Claude. Currently, Anthropic’s tool remains the gold standard for many developers.
xAI’s Grok Build AI coding agent is still early days for the beta. However, the launch suggests Musk’s AI venture is finally ready to compete in the professional arena.
