While passkeys are usually safer, they have one big limitation: it’s hard to move them between apps. Right now, you can sync passkeys across devices within the same ecosystem, but transferring them to a different app, like another password manager, is not easy. While Apple already solved this with iOS 26 and macOS 26, the feature hasn’t come to Android. Well, that could change, as Google seems to be working on allowing users to move passkeys stored on their Android device across apps.
Google may soon let users move passkeys between password managers on Android
Folks at Android Authority report that they were able to enable the Android interface that allowed them to transfer passkeys between apps. The outlet was able to enable new options for importing and exporting passkeys using the Google Password Manager. In the current state, the Google Password Manager’s Settings only show “Import passwords” and “Export Passwords” options. But after making some under-the-surface changes, the publication could enable new “Import passwords & passkeys” and “Export passwords & passkeys” options.
In fact, they were able to get these options to work. There seems to be no direct option to export passkeys to another app. The description says users will see a prompt to transfer them when they open another password manager app.
It’s not publicly available yet
Meanwhile, tapping the “Import passwords & passkeys” will show a prompt to choose the password manager that currently stores your passkeys. Tapping next will show you the list of all supported password managers on the device. Once you select one, the screen takes you to that app, where you can transfer passwords, passkeys, and other stored items to Google Password Manager. The apps reportedly don’t allow taking screenshots, but once it imports, users will see a success message.
That said, the feature is currently not available for users, and it’s not clear when Google will make it live. It’s also worth noting that the ability to transfer passkeys could be exclusive to a few providers of password managers who back the Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP). The list includes Google, Apple, and Samsung.
