However, this has often involved hurdles like high electricity costs and local pushback over land use. Now, it seems the industry is looking much higher for its next expansion. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Google and SpaceX are currently in talks to launch AI data centers into orbit.

The potential deal arrives at a key moment for SpaceX. The company is preparing for a massive IPO later this year, pitching orbital data centers as a key commercial product to investors. While Google is exploring partnerships with other rocket companies, its existing relationship with SpaceX is deep—Alphabet already owns about 6.1% of Elon Musk’s aerospace firm.
Google isn’t waiting around, either. Through its “Project Suncatcher” initiative, the company plans to launch prototype satellites by early 2027. These “tiny racks of machines,” as CEO Sundar Pichai described them, will serve as a testbed for scaling space-based computing.
Why go to space?
Advocates for orbital computing point to several potential benefits. After all, space has abundant solar energy and doesn’t require costly real estate on Earth. Supporters argue these facilities would be free from the local environmental and infrastructure concerns that ground-based projects often face.
SpaceX is positioning this technology as the most cost-effective place for AI compute in the coming years. The company has already filed for authorization to launch up to one million satellites to support its orbital ambitions. It also recently signed a deal with Anthropic to provide massive amounts of AI computing power.
The challenges ahead
The excitement is there, but there are some technical and financial hurdles to overcome. Some experts remain skeptical. They note that once you factor in satellite construction and launch costs, terrestrial data centers are currently much cheaper. Managing heat and maintenance in a vacuum. However, industry leaders like Sundar Pichai reckon that in ten years’ time, building data centers in space will look like business as usual.
