The native camera app on Apple’s iPhones are pretty basic. There are some slightly more advanced controls, but they pale in comparison to third-party apps and those offered by some Android phone makers. However, Apple is expected to make changes to the camera app in iOS 27.
Apple to make changes to camera app
In a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is apparently making changes to its native camera app in the upcoming iOS 27 update. These changes will finally bring actual pro-level controls to the app, something that iOS users have been asking for for years.
Gurman says that the camera app will feature a UI that is fully customizable. This comes in the form of widgets, where users can pick and choose their own set of controls. This means that you actually get to choose what you see in the UI. This could come in handy for photographers or videographers who shoot with very specific settings.
Each capture mode is also said to have its own set of widgets. For instance, the photo mode comes with widgets for depth-of-field and exposure controls. The widgets can be split further into “basic,” “manual,” and “settings.” Last but not least, it looks like Apple plans on integrating Siri into the camera app. This will take advantage of Apple’s Visual Intelligence to help identify objects or text in other languages.
What brought on the change?
So, why is Apple making these changes now despite users asking for it years ago? Turns out, we might have the former co-founder of Halide to thank for that. For those unfamiliar, Halide is a very popular third-party camera app. However, at some point in time, Apple actually hired Sebastiaan de With, the co-founder of the app.
de With announced earlier this year that he would be part of Apple’s design team. While we can’t confirm his actual contributions yet, there is a good chance this redesign probably had some input from him. At this point, we don’t know how the redesigned camera app looks like. However, WWDC 2026 is taking place soon. The event will run from June 8 to June 12, so there’s a good chance we’ll have more details then.
