YouTube is testing a major redesign to its app’s organization, one that might hit your muscle memory. YouTube has confirmed experimenting with a redesigned mobile feed layout that moves the Subscriptions tab to a new swipeable top navigation area. On its part, the company hopes that this change will make it easier to find the content you care about.
YouTube is experimenting with a redesigned swipeable mobile feed layout
Currently, the Subscription tab lives in YouTube’s bottom navigation bar. Reaching here requires one additional tap after opening the app. While it doesn’t sound like a big deal, YouTube wants to make it even easier to reach. In a new post on Google’s community support forums, YouTube confirmed that it is testing a redesigned mobile feed navigation system. It is moving the feed categories to the top of the screen and making them swipeable.
This sounds familiar to the X (formerly Twitter) app’s layout, where “For You” and “Following” feeds sit side by side, and you can switch between them by swiping. The YouTube app probably wants to have that fluid experience rather than have users switch tabs via the bottom bar.
Currently testing with a limited group of Android and iOS users
YouTube may also test moving other content feeds, like Movies and TV, into this new top navigation area. The goal here is to help users access paid content in one place. Meanwhile, in this new layout, the Explore menu may appear only when pulling down to refresh the feed or scrolling up the screen.
YouTube, for now, is testing the redesigned feed experience with a small percentage of users on Android and iPhone globally. The company will use the feedback to see if these changes simplify how you navigate your feeds. If the test becomes successful, we might see the new swipeable layout become a reality.
