A rather interesting Samsung patent has just surfaced. This patent was initially published in Korea in mid-December last year, while it arrived to the US on January 30 this year. It is just not making the rounds, though.
Samsung’s new tri-fold patent has a surprising S Pen storage location
What’s so interesting about this patent? Well, it shows a tri-fold smartphone with an S Pen tucked away… in its hinge? Yes, that seems to be the case. Well, the S Pen silo seems to be attached to the hinge, as you can see below.
It seems like Samsung is thinking of keeping the S Pen around, especially for larger foldable devices. The patent clearly explains this is a device with multiple panels, hinge areas, and a digital pen that can be stored in an internal space created when the device is folded.
The patent also talks about magnets, charging, and detecting whether this stylus is properly stored. If this comes to pass, one side of the device may end up being narrower than the other (or the other two), actually.
There’s no guarantee Samsung will utilize this patent
If Samsung ends up adopting this idea, and that’s a big if, this could be one of the future Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold devices. Do note that companies register all sorts of patents, but tons of them never get used in an actual product.
As a reminder, Samsung released only one tri-fold device thus far, the Galaxy Z TriFold. That phone was not available for long, however, as Samsung decided to call it quits not long after the device launched. The company said it was a limited launch. Samsung does seem to be working on a second-gen model, though. We’re not sure when that one will see the light of day, though.
