The Fitbit app is getting another major change in the coming weeks, ditching the Fitbit branding for Google Health instead. This is a pretty big change, because the Fitbit name has been around for a very long time, almost two decades at this point. Now, Google isn’t ditching the name entirely, as it is still being used for the Fitbit Air, announced today. But the app will be called Google Health, which honestly, makes more sense.
Google has been previewing the new Fitbit app for quite some time now, which was secretly the new Google Health app. So this is really the third redesign the app has gotten in just the last few years. But this time, it’s definitely worth it. Google is making the app much more like Apple Health. So you are able to not only track your fitness, but also your health. Including your medical data, lab tests, and so much more. Think of it as a competitor to Apple Health on iOS. It’s going to be that in-depth.

Fitbit Air is available for pre-order today, shipping on May 26.
What’s actually changing
If you haven’t been using the preview that Google has had available, then quite a bit is changing. If you have been using the preview, then mostly just the logos are changing. But the new app is structured around four tabs: Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health. It’s a much cleaner setup than the current Fitbit app, which could feel very cluttered. Google is also cramming in more AI features, like the Google Health Coach.
What’s new here is that you’ll be able to pull in data from Apple Health, Health Connect, and hundreds of other apps and devices. That’s actually a really big deal. Being able to bring in your Apple Health data to the Google Health app is huge, and hopefully something we’ll see from Samsung and others in the future. This means that you can use the Fitbit Air cross-platform.
Fitbit Premium is also being replaced by Google Health Premium, at the same price of $9.99/month or $99.99/year, though it is being bundled in with Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra storage plans.
Finally, the Google Fit app is going to disappear. Those still using that app will be forced to migrate later this year to Google Health, and will finally get rid of the two-health app situation Google has been in.
