A confusing teaser video recently sent the Android community into a minor panic. However, Google is now stepping in to set the record straight. Despite speculation that Android might be moving toward a translucent, “Liquid Glass” aesthetic similar to Apple’s iOS 26, Google’s official word from the top is a firm “no.”
The Android 17 teaser that sparked the “Liquid Glass” chaos
The controversy started with Sameer Samat, Google’s president of the Android ecosystem. Yesterday, he shared a 15-second teaser for the upcoming “Android Show.” The clip features the iconic Android mascot pulling a light switch, causing its body to shift from classic green to a semi-translucent, glass-like appearance.
To many observers, the refractions and opaque textures looked suspiciously like Apple’s recent design overhaul. Liquid Glass has been heavily criticized for readability issues and slow animations on the iOS side. So, Android fans quickly took to social media to express their concern.
Google’s direct response: “not happening”
The backlash was loud enough to catch Samat’s attention. Responding directly to worried users on X (formerly Twitter), he clarified that a Liquid Glass makeover is “not happening.”
Google has spent years refining its own “Material 3 Expressive” design language. The latter focuses on refreshed icon shapes, customizable quick settings, fluid animations, and an overall colorful vibe. While Android 17 is rumored to introduce more blur effects, we have already seen this effect even years before Liquid Glass.
What’s actually coming?
If the glass-like mascot isn’t a design hint, what is it? Many industry insiders suggest the translucent look might be a metaphor for transparency. It could also refer to new AI features arriving to Android 17.
Beyond the visual speculation, the upcoming May 12 event will bring significant announcements. The list includes:
- Android 17: New details on the next major OS version.
- Aluminium OS: Progress on the project to merge ChromeOS and Android for a better desktop experience.
- AI Integration: Further expansion of Gemini and other smart tools within the ecosystem.
Google will stream the next Android Show on YouTube on May 12 at 1:00 PM ET.
