The Everett City Council recently voted to approve spending an additional $10.6 million on its downtown stadium project.
The money will pay for completing the project’s design and property acquisition work on the site known as the Outdoor Event Center. The move is part of Everett’s efforts to partner with the Everett AquaSox on a new downtown event center that meets Major League Baseball’s new facility requirements and allows for a variety of community events, sports and festivals.
The Everett AquaSox, a minor league affiliate of the Mariners, recently approved terms for a 30-year lease along with the United Soccer League. The city will loan itself the $10.6 million from its general fund. It plans to repay the loan in a few months using proceeds from a bond that will fund much of the stadium project. Plans for the proposed stadium call for 5,000 seats, a clubhouse area, and a public walking path.
