Google Docs recently got a direct integration with Gemini AI, making it an AI-powered document editor. Now, the tech giant is making Gemini even more useful inside Google Docs by adding a custom rules feature. Users can now give AI custom instructions on how they want it to write, summarize, or structure the content.
Google Docs enables Gemini to follow custom rules set by the users
With the new feature, users can now set clear rules for how Gemini should work inside Google Docs. The instructions can be both simple or detailed, as per the user’s preference. To give you an example, you can direct Gemini to always write in a formal tone and avoid casual phrases. You can also tell it to end documents with a summary or use bullet points. Basically, you can set your own rules, and Gemini will follow that.
Google is constantly improving how Gemini works inside its digital ecosystem, including Google Docs. Earlier features like “Help me write” and “Help me create” have already made drafting easier. Now, the feature ensures the output remains personalized and as per the user’s wants. They can finally define their own writing preferences instead of adjusting results manually each time.
The feature has started rolling out globally
As per the reports, the new feature started rolling out on May 4, 2026, globally. Google says all users should have access to the function within the next 15 days. So if you are not able to access the custom instructions feature yet, it’s better to wait for a few more days. The feature will be enabled automatically, and the user does not have to change anything manually.
Users can simply open the Gemini side panel and type in the instructions they want it to follow. Since the AI supports up to 1000 instructions, users have plenty of flexibility. It will be available to Business and Enterprise customers, as well as subscribers to Google AI plans like AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra.
