Instagram, like many other social media platforms, is a home to AI-generated content. These days, you can find a bulk of AI-generated reels or posts in your feed or explore page. No doubt, such content often results in making users’ Instagram feed full of trash. Although Instagram’s recent move to crack down on content aggregators doesn’t specifically target AI-generated content, it is taking action against low-value/effort content. Now, Meta appears to be getting serious about transparency around AI-generated content with Instagram’s new “AI creator” label.
Instagram’s new “AI creator” label looks to bring transparency among users
Instagram is reportedly testing a new “AI creator” label for creators who often post AI-generated content. The new label will apparently be visible in both creators’ profiles as well as their posts and reels in the app. As seen in the screen shot below, tapping on Instagram’s “AI creator” label reads, “This profile posts content that was generated or modified with AI.”
As Meta notes, the new AI creator label is part of “an effort to raise the bar on AI transparency on Instagram.” If you use Instagram, you must be aware of Meta’s AI info badges, which suggest at an AI-generated/modified post. However, the new AI creator label is something different. Meta is being rather direct in its wording. This way, users will have a clear understanding of whether the creator they are following uses AI or not.
That said, the “AI creator” label is entirely optional at this point. So, you are likely to come across multiple posts on Instagram with the AI info label. However, given Meta’s AI detection systems, it’s entirely possible that you wouldn’t come across any label at all. Meta is still trying to push creators to use the “AI creator” label if they often post AI content. In an in-app message seen below, Meta notes that this “label builds trust by helping your audience understand what they are seeing on Instagram.”

Meta should consider making it a default option
With the rise of AI-generated content, the issue with Instagram, and many other online platforms, is that such content tends to deceive people. That especially true in case of old-aged users’ group on the platform. This often results in misinformation. This is why Meta should consider making it default. Wondering what if AI creators don’t feel like using those labels to clarify what they are posting? Well, Meta can take extreme measures like taking down the account or the post.
All that said, with the boom of accessible AI, Meta is making efforts to curb AI misinformation on its platform. It remains to be seen whether these labels will be implemented on Facebook as well. That’s mostly because it’s another platform where you can find heaps of AI-generated trash these days.
