Spotify, in recent times, has been quite busy with a handful of new announcements. It introduced redesigned tablet apps, Fitness with Spotify, and others. The list doesn’t seem to end there, as there’s one more in the works. We’re seeing details of a new ‘Bulk Redownload’ Spotify feature to fix the lossless audio offline upgrade issue.
Spotify is reportedly testing a ‘Bulk Redownload’ tool to fix its lossless audio offline upgrades
As a refresher, on Spotify, it’s possible to download audio onto your device for offline playback. Premium subscribers have the choice to choose between low (~24kbps), normal (~96kbps), high (~160kbps), very high (~320kbps), and lossless (variable, up to ~2,100kbps) quality for their downloaded files.
The lossless audio tier was introduced recently. However, users noticed an annoying behavior when the upgrade became available: switching the download quality to lossless affected only future downloads, while their existing downloads remained at their previous quality. It reportedly showed the “New song downloads will be in lossless. Older downloads won’t be affected” message to users.
That can be frustrating if you have a large library of songs and albums downloaded, as you would have to redownload them. The app will not automatically upgrade the quality. But for other non-lossless tiers, Spotify automatically upgrades the quality.
This may eliminate the need to redownload the songs
Now, folks at Android Authority, within Spotify for Android 9.1.48.148, have spotted code for a new ‘Bulk Redownload’ feature that might address this shortcoming for lossless users. The new strings don’t explicitly mention they’ll target the lossless tier. But since the app already manages upgrades for other tiers, the new Bulk Redownload feature could be for lossless.
There are also strings for warning dialogs for storage space and data use, which again tie to the lossless tier. The report adds that “%s” could be placeholder strings. The app changes this placeholder information dynamically based on user data. That said, there are chances that the system warning dialogs and the bulk redownload feature could be available across all download quality tiers, giving users a consistent experience regardless of which tier they switch to.
