Sony is reportedly reaching a settlement for a class action lawsuit that has to do with the PlayStation Store that would see those who purchased games off of it get a little money back. The class action lawsuit is being brought by Saveri Law Firm, and was initially filed back in 2021. Now, just about five years later, it seems the lawsuit is finally coming to a resolution.
The lawsuit stems from Sony’s removal of game-specific vouchers from third-party retailers. These would allow retailers outside the PlayStation Store to sell vouchers for digital games. If you go to a retailer like Best Buy now, you’ll find a wide selection of PlayStation games available through the site. These are all physical copies, though. The lawsuit argues that Sony’s removal of game-specific vouchers from third-party retailers, was anti-competitive, and caused gamers to pay more money for digital games on the PlayStation Store because there was no other options.
The PlayStation Store settlement only covers specific games
While this lawsuit looks to be reaching a settlement, those getting a refund from Sony would have to have purchased a specific game or games to qualify. On top of this, games had to be purchased between April of 2019 and December of 2023. This could be on PS4 or PS5, as long as the purchase was made within those dates for the qualified game titles.
As for which games count, there are quite a few as the list is fairly large. Some titles include Demons Souls (likely the PS5 remake that was done by Blue Point Games), Final Fantasy XIV Starter Edition, Destiny 2: Forsaken – Legendary Collection, NBA 2K18, and several more. Saveri Law Firm has published a full list of compatible games.
Even if you purchased a game on the list within the necessary time frame, it might still be a while before any money comes back to you. A fairness hearing for the settlement is being held on October 15. So any money probably isn’t being distributed before then. You don’t have to do anything to be part of the settlement class. So essentially doing nothing will be the way to go if you want a refund for an eligible purchase. The lawsuit doesn’t mention how refunds would be distributed, but the most logical method would be dumping that money into the eligible PSN Wallets.
