There was a time when many people fancied having a Facebook or Instagram account. One of the key factors behind the success of both platforms has been connecting users to family and friends. In the last few years or so, both Instagram and Facebook have changed quite a lot. Albeit in a wrong way. Both of Meta’s social media platforms are gradually losing their charm, and most of it has to be blamed on poor feeds, which many prefer calling a “trash heap” these days. Unfortunately for Meta, the effect of poor feeds is resulting in losing Instagram and Facebook users.
Facebook and Instagram reportedly losing users over feed quality concerns
As you may know, Meta reported its FY 2026 Q3 earnings yesterday. In the report, the company admitted that daily active users on its social media platforms dropped by 20 million in this quarter. Just to be clear, the number doesn’t only represent Facebook and Instagram’s user base.
However, it hints that users are unhappy with what their Facebook and Instagram feed is offering. If you are also among many Instagram and Facebook users who feel that their feed is full of trash content, there is some good news for you.
Meta is actually working behind the scenes to fix the quality of both Facebook and Instagram feeds. So, what exactly is Meta doing about it, you may ask, right? Well, the company is cracking down on content aggregators as part of the new Instagram policy.
Penalizing content aggregators appears to one of the ways to fix social media feed
As part of this move, Instagram’s recommendation algorithm will penalize unoriginal content. In other words, accounts that mainly repost photos or carousel posts without meaningful edits will no longer be eligible for recommendations across the app. This rule builds on similar efforts previously implemented by Meta to curb rash Reels feed and to stop losing Instagram users.
With this move, Meta looks to give more visibility to creators who add their own perspective via their content. Notably, low-effort reposts, like simple reuploads or minor tweaks, are likely to see reduced reach, in areas like the Discover tab. All in all, Meta has a plan in place to offer users something meaningful in their feed, at least on Instagram for now. It remains to be seen whether the company will implement similar rules for Facebook.
