Google is rolling out Gemini to cars with Google built-in (also called Android Automotive), replacing Google Assistant with a much smarter, more conversational AI experience. The update is coming to both new and existing vehicles via a software update. So if you already have a car with Google built in, you’re not left out.
The rollout kicks off in English in the United States first, with more languages and countries to follow in the coming months.
The biggest shift here is how natural the whole thing feels. Forget specific voice commands. You can just talk to Gemini. Ask Gemini to find highly rated outdoor restaurants along your route, check if there’s an event clogging up traffic near the stadium, or tell it to reply to a text and add your ETA, then follow up with changes without starting over. It pulls from Google Maps for real-time navigation context, which makes it genuinely useful rather than just a party trick.
Gemini Live Turns Your Commute Into Something More
One of the more interesting additions is Gemini Live, which is launching in beta. It opens up free-flowing conversations while you drive, think about your destination, brainstorm hike options, or dive down a random rabbit hole if something sparks your curiosity mid-answer. You can even interrupt it, which is how real conversations actually work.
There’s also deep vehicle integration, which is arguably the most practical piece of this whole update. Google worked directly with automakers to pull in manufacturer-provided owner’s manuals, so you can ask things like how to program your trunk height for a low garage ceiling and actually get a useful, model-specific answer. EV owners get real-time battery insights baked in too, ask about your charge level, your battery on arrival, or find a nearby charger without digging through menus.
Eligible users who signed into their Google Account in their car will see a prompt to upgrade. Once you’re in, just say “Hey Google,” tap the mic, or hit your steering wheel button to get started.
This is a meaningful upgrade for Android Auto alternatives and the broader in-car Google experience, and it’s good to see Google keeping older vehicles in the loop rather than making this a new-car-only feature.
