It’s now possible to run Linux on a PS5, opening up the console to PC games, including PC versions of PlayStation exclusives like Marvel’s Spider-Man. Putting Linux on a PlayStation console has been a thing since the PS3 days. Really old version of the fat PS3, which was the original console and a little more open, were able to run Linux and other PC software for things like homebrew apps. This was until Sony patched the console with new firmware.
Since then, homebrew enthusiasts have been cleverly coming up with ways to get around these patches, but Sony always ends up patching things again, and the cycle continues. Now it’s possible to get Linux running on a PS5 (for now), thanks to a new mod that has been released by a developer named Andy Nguyen.
The PS5 Linux mod is a soft mod, which means it’s gone if you power the console off
While the obvious thing to keep in mind is that Sony will probably come up with a way to ensure this doesn’t work in due time, the big caveat right now is that this is a soft mod. So, if you power down your PS5, restart it, or put it into rest mode, you will have to re-run the exploit. For those dedicated enough to do this every single time, you essentially have a gaming PC in your PS5 for however long it may take for Sony to shut this down with a software update.
Ngyuen has made this software and the process for setting it up available on his GitHub. He has also shown off the mod working while playing GTA 5 Enhanced with Ray Tracing, and Marvel’s Spider-Man running in 1440p resolution at 60 frames per second. It’s not possible to dual-boot this Linux soft mod and the PS5 OS, so you’ll want to keep that in mind. Ngyuen also states that built-in Bluetooth is not supported. You can use a Bluetooth dongle, or plug the DualSense in via USB.
